This rare polyglot model book by Chrispijn van de Passe contains more than 200 prints, representing various subjects as academic figures, perspective, proportions, models of nude women, dressed figures, quadruped animals, birds, fishes and insects, many of them first-rate, after designs by Goltzius, Abraham Bloemaert, R. Savery, Guercino, Lanfranco and the Cavaliere d'Arpino. It gives us an excellent impression of the study program followed by 17th-century artists in training. The education of apprentices is described lesson by lesson. De Passe, who worked as a drawing instructor in the circle of Prince Maurice, still advises certain techniques that had been practiced in the Middle Ages. On the other hand, his publication of this "large encyclopedia of images" (Gombrich) places him in the ranks of the educational reformers in the art.
The re-publication of this drawing book with its introduction provides a most welcome opportunity for art historians to get acquainted with De Passe's rare but significant publication.
